Understanding your claim submission cutoff date

Overview

In your Member Centre, you’ll see a ‘Claim Submission Cutoff’ date listed in the details of your Health Spending Account, Wellness Spending Account or Enhanced Health Blend feature.

This is a grace period after your Benefit Period ends that gives you extra time to submit eligible expenses.

It doesn't extend the Benefit Period or make expenses incurred after your Benefit Period ends eligible for reimbursement. It simply gives you additional time to submit expenses that were incurred and not submitted during your Benefit Period.

The length of this period depends on your benefit feature and Plan design.

The details

How claim submission cutoff periods work

When your Benefit Period ends, you’ll have a specific timeline to submit any remaining eligible expenses from that Benefit Period.

As long as the eligible expense was incurred before your Benefit Period ended, you can submit it during this time.

Once the claim submission cutoff time has passed, expenses from that Benefit Period can no longer be submitted.

Which expenses can I submit?

Only eligible expenses that were incurred during the Benefit Period are eligible.

In addition to Plan and CRA guidelines, the service date of your expense is what determines eligibility. You can review eligibility by feature in your Member Centre.

Typical claim submission cutoff timelines

Claim submission cutoff dates can vary by feature type and Plan design.

Typically, HSA Classic has a 90 day submission cutoff date, and HSA Rollover, HSA Rollback, HSA Enhanced, Wellness Spending Accounts and Enhanced Health Blends have a 30 day cutoff.

Your organization may have opted for a different claim submission cutoff timeline. For your specific Plan, you can locate your claims submission cutoff date in your Member Centre.  Finding your Plan details will show you how.

Depending on the benefit feature type, Members who have been deactivated from their Plan will also have time to submit claims once they’ve been deactivated. Details in the Member Centre will be updated with end date and the new claim submission cutoff date.

Anything else?

A claim submission cutoff date gives you some extra time to submit expenses you’ve incurred within your Benefit Period and not yet submitted. It doesn't extend your Benefit Period or make expenses incurred after your Benefit Period ends eligible for reimbursement.
