Making a travel claim through Excess Medical coverage

This article is for Plan Members who have our Excess Medical feature as part of their Blended Benefits.

Excess Medical coverage provided by Wawanesa Life includes travel coverage through their partner, CanAssistance.

Below are directions to submit a claim to CanAssistance when unexpected medical costs come up while travelling.

Before travelling, contact CanAssistance for pre-trip information:

  • In North America call 1-800-268-7955
  • All other locations, call collect 1-519-742-2605 

Before making a claim, you’ll need your WLI # to help CanAssistance match your claim to your coverage. Contact the Blendable Customer Experience Team to get your WLI #.

Note that CanAssistance does not pay providers directly while you’re travelling. You’ll pay out of pocket while you’re travelling, then submit a claim with any expenses for reimbursement.

  1. Visit the CanAssistance website
  2. Travel Medical Insurance
    • Select the form associated with your home province.
    • Carefully review the Important Notice, select your home province from the list, and click Next.
  3. Complete and submit the online claim form
    • Enter Beneficiary (patient) information
    • Enter Policyholder information (this is the person who has the Blendable Group Benefits)
      • Under "Travel Insurance Company" choose "Wawanesa Life Insurance"
      • Enter your WLI # as your Contract, Certificate or Identification Number
      • Leave Group or Policy Number and File Number blank.
    • Attach all the documents required
    • Confirm you’ve read the privacy & consent wording by checking the box, then click Next.
    • Provide details of your incident (e.g. location, date, types of services rendered), then click Next.
    • Provide details of the expenses incurred and method of reimbursement if applicable, then click Next.
    • Carefully read and complete the Mandate, then click Submit to submit your claim for review.
  4. Reviewing your claim
    • After submitting your claim, CanAssistance will send you an email confirming they’ve received your claim submission.
    • Within 10 days you will receive another email confirming your claim is being reviewed. This email will have your CanAssistance file number. You can give the file number to the CanAssistance Team to if you have any questions.
    • If there are any missing documents or information, CanAssistance will contact you via email. Once your claim has been assessed the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) which provides details of the eligible expenses being reimbursed will be sent to you via regular mail.
