Understanding qualified dependants for Enhanced Health Blends (EHB), Peace of Mind and Accessory Benefits

Overview

A dependant is a family member covered under your benefits, meaning they can access the same benefits you have and are eligible for claims.

For Enhanced Health Blend Plans, Peace of Mind and Accessory Benefits, there are specific guidelines that dependants must meet.

This article will be an overview of who qualifies as a dependant for Enhanced Health Blend (EHB) Plans, Peace of Mind features and Accessory Benefits.

The details

Who can you add as a dependant?

Spouse or Partner:

  • This includes someone you’re married to or a common-law partner.
  • For common-law partners, you must have lived together for the past 12 consecutive months.
  • In cases of separation or agreements, a spouse may still qualify. Keep documentation for audits or CRA reviews.

Children: Biological, adopted, or stepchildren who:

  • Are financially supported by you.
  • Do not have a spouse or partner and are not working full-time.
  • Are under 21 or under 25 if they’re full-time students.
  • Have provincial healthcare coverage in your province of residence.

When can you add or remove dependants?

Dependants can be added or removed only after a major life event, such as:

  • Marriage or entering a common-law relationship.
  • Divorce, separation, or ending a common-law relationship.
  • Birth or adoption of a child.
  • A child starting or finishing school.

Supporting documentation

Some types of dependants may require supporting documentation to confirm eligibility.

For example, to qualify an adult disabled child, a medical certification from an authorized medical professional may be needed.

To qualify a full-time student as a dependant, we may require proof of financial dependency or enrolment in a full time program.
