Which naturopathic services are eligible?

Overview

While many professional services performed by a Naturopathic Doctor are eligible medical expenses, products they sell or provide are often treated differently.

The type of benefit feature included in your Plan helps determine eligibility. You can find your Plan details in your Member Centre. This article will show you how.

Now, let’s dive in.

The details

Eligible professional services

Professional services provided by a registered Naturopathic Doctor are generally considered eligible medical expenses according to the CRA. This is because the CRA considers Naturopaths to be Authorized Medical Practitioners as long as they meet provincial requirements to practice.

The services they provide will typically be considered eligible for Health Spending Accounts (HSA) and Enhanced Health Blend (EHB) features. Wellness Spending Account (WSA) eligibility will depend on Plan design.

The services they may provide include:

  • Consultations and appointments
  • Saliva tests
  • Nutritional analysis
  • Stress management services
  • Injections
  • IV therapy
  • Prolotherapy

IV therapy and injections

When it comes to IV therapy and injections, it's important to understand what's being charged. Make sure you include supporting documentation with your claim submission so our team can review the details.

Typically, the fee to administer the treatment may be eligible from HSAs and EHBs.  However, the IV solution or injectable solution is unlikely to be. WSA eligibility will vary based on Plan design.

Products and supplies

Vitamins, supplements, and many other products sold by a Naturopathic Doctor aren't eligible medical expenses from HSAs or EHBs. WSA eligibility will depend on Plan design.

You can read more about the eligibility of vitamins, supplements and other over-the-counter supplements in this article.

Anything else?

Submitting supporting documentation with your expense will go a long way. Because a single visit to your Naturopathic Doctor may include both eligible and ineligible expenses, an itemized receipt or invoice allows our Claims Team to review the details and determine what can be reimbursed.
