My claim indicates that over the counter counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements weren't eligible. Why?

The short and sweet answer - because the CRA said so here and here!

While some Plans have features that allow the reimbursement of these types of products, some Plans are subject to the CRA's rules.

That includes:

  • HSA Classic
  • HSA Rollover
  • HSA Rollback
  • Enhanced Health Blends

CRA draws the line at "controlled" substances that require the intervention of a medical practitioner in order to purchase them.

Over-the-counter (OTC) medications, supplements, and vitamins - including those prescribed by a medical practitioner - aren't eligible for reimbursement, because even without a prescription, you could simply walk into a store and buy them off the shelf.

While we agree that over-the-counter products are often helpful, we have to follow those guidelines.
